The performance of spirometry is undertaken in a wide range of areas to measure thoracic health and includes health assessments for workplace monitoring and pre-employment medicals. This spirometry refresher training program offered by KINNECT Training should be completed within 12 months of attending an initial full day spirometry workshop.
There is strong evidence that the quality of spirometry improves with regular performance, and where the operators have access to ongoing support and feedback after completion of training. Refresher training ensures the operators remain abreast of changes in technology and research in the field. KINNECT’s spirometry refresher training will ensure you are up to date with any changes in guidelines issued by the American Thoracic Society (ATS)/European Respiratory Society (ERS). What you will Learn
A program to reinforce your skills.
The following describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare a client for spirometry, complete the spirometry test and to provide a report as an aid to the diagnosis and management of ventilatory impairment.
This unit applies to any health worker who takes spirometry measurements. Spirometry measurement is commonly conducted in hospitals, respiratory physicians’ rooms, general practitioner (GP) rooms, pharmacies and pathology collection centres.
The skills in this unit is applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice which includes Standards for the Delivery of Spirometry for Coal Mine Workers as outlined by the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand in 2017.
At the completion of this program it is expected that the students can demonstrate their knowledge and apply the practical skills in the following areas as necessary to meet the standards of the Nationally Recognised unit of competency and the required standard for performing spirometry for the assessment and monitoring of coal mine workers’ lung function noted by the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Target Audience
To be eligible to attend a refresher training workshop, all students must provide evidence of the following:
- Certificate of completion of accredited spirometry course within the previous 12 months
- Logbook documenting that 100 spirometry assessments or more have been completed since completion of the initial spirometry course
This program is directed at medical and allied health professionals required to perform spirometry assessments and contribute to the interpretation of results. Successful completion of this program allows you to maintain your nationally recognised qualification and meet the requirements to undertake assessments for the Queensland Coal Mining Industry as required by Queensland Health.
